Fort Portal is a town in the Western Region of Uganda. It is the seat of both Kabarole district and the Tooro Kingdom. It is located about 180 kilometres north-west of Mbarara, the largest city in the western region.
According to the 2002 national census, the population of Fort Portal was about 41,000. In the 1990s, the town was praised as the cleanest in the whole country.
Today the town is cosmopolitan and residents of different clans and nationalities have settled in the town. Some of the visible people who reside here include Banyankole, Banyarwanda, Bakonzo, Bakiga and Congolese settling in Tooro.
Business is booming here and the town boosts new buildings coming up including the newly constructed Mpanga market. Many banks, bars and restaurants have also been set up and you can feel the hussle of a busy town straight away when you enter Fort Portal.
Streets such as Lugard road, Mugurusi road and Kisenyi are some of the busiest streets in the town. Fort Portal is the best place to tour in the whole of Western Uganda as its weather is very unique. It doesn't shine for too long and it doesn't rain for too long. It has the perfect weather for tourists and the food is amazing.
Fort Portal is also the home of the youngest King in Uganda; King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

There’s plenty to do in Fort Portal. Some of the popular tourist attractions located here and worth a visit include the famous Amabere ga Nyinamwiru, the several beautiful crater lakes, the rift valley escarpment, Queen Elizabeth National Park in the neighbourhood and the amazing tea estates.
